How do you define wisdom? Where do you find it? What is an examined life?

Interesting question.

In my opinion, asking how do you define wisdom is reminiscent of asking how do you define love. Is there really a definition for it? We can say we have it, or others have it, but do the wise truly recognize their own wisdom? Does anyone really know what it means?

I’m still young, my knowledge is very limited. I haven’t been out there much, but let me try to put my simplest definition of wisdom I can come up with.
I would say wisdom is the ability to realize when one is wrong, but also the ability to realize when one is right. Wisdom is the ability to know when to fight, and when to accept defeat. Wisdom is the knowledge that one can never know everything in the world and how it all works. Wisdom is when one learns to put others above themselves. However, wisdom is finding peace within yourself, without having the need to question everything and just let it be.

Although who really knows, this is my current definition of wisdom but it could change in a heartbeat. Asking me where to find wisdom is counterproductive. I have not found wisdom, I’m still young, I still haven’t seen many of the things there is to see. In fact, my definition of wisdom could be completely wrong but I guess that’s besides the point.

An examined life. Some would say that this is boring and a waste of time. However I think it is important to lead an examined life. An examined life is when you are able to take your actions and others actions and look at them analytically. Some actions are lead by passion, some by logic. It takes the ability to see what you’ve done, and decide whether or not you made the right decision. Of course there will be times when you realize you made the wrong decision, and there will also be times when you can’t decide whether you made the right or the wrong one. But knowledge comes with time and in my opinion, a certain amount of wisdom as well. Once you learn from your mistakes, you can try not to make them again. Although sometimes it’s hard not to repeat past mistakes. But that’s the point of examining your life, it’s to learn from your past mistakes and to help you move on.

I hope that made sense and wasn’t just some pointless rambling…
